At the time, she told Billboard: “I was diagnosed with Lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke. I wanted so badly to say: ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.'”
The following year, Selena revealed she was taking a break from her career to focus on bettering her mental health. Then, in 2017, she revealed she had received a kidney transplant as part of her treatment for lupus.
Now, speaking to Amy Schumer for Interview magazine, Selena has opened up about what it was like having her personal life constantly speculated about in the media.
“I don’t remember a time when that wasn’t the case,” Selena said, adding that what helps her deal with such invasiveness is knowing it’ll eventually move on to someone else.
However, Selena also said that there are positives about the whole thing — namely, that she can be vocal about her experience with mental health and encourage others to get help.
She said: Sometimes it’s been bad for my career, but other times it’s like, “Now I can talk about things like my depression and anxiety, things that I’ve struggled with and which I’m totally open about, because I believe in seeking help.”
