Through their expertise, they determined that it was indeed an ancient tomb dating back to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (907 – 960).
In 1981, workers in Xiangyang, Hubei province ( China ) were digging the foundation to build a house when they suddenly hit a rock with a strange color and many characters that resembled ancient writing. Suspecting that it might be part of an ancient tomb , they quickly notified local authorities and cultural relics experts.
Upon receiving the information, experts quickly went to the scene to check. Through their expertise, they determined that it was indeed an ancient tomb dating back to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (907-960).
Around the tomb there are many traces of grave robber holes. This makes archaeologists believe that tomb robbers have “visited” many times to steal valuable burial items. Therefore, they do not hold much hope of finding valuable artifacts inside this ancient tomb. However, when excavating the tomb, experts were extremely surprised to find 80 sets of remains right in the entrance area of the tomb. Each person died in a different position and next to them were grave digging tools.
According to experts, next to these 80 bodies are grave digging tools that help prove they are grave robbers. After entering the ancient tomb, the tomb robbers fell into a terrifying trap that caused them to “enter but not get out”, which was a sand trap. If a tomb robber breaks into an ancient tomb, a sand trap will be triggered. The sand will flow down continuously and cover the hole that the thief dug when entering. Accordingly, the grave robber will be buried alive in a sand trap or suffocate due to lack of oxygen.
The research team said that some walls and ceilings under the main crypt inside the ancient tomb were not solidly built. Instead, the ancients arranged large amounts of sand in these places. If a thief recklessly breaks into the tomb like this, it will be difficult for them to escape alive. The above 80 grave robbers are the clearest evidence of the dangers of the extremely effective anti-theft traps of the ancients.
