Premier League considers eliminating VAR from next season
The Premier League confirmed that it will hold a vote on the possibility of stopping the use of VAR in the tournament in the 2024/25 season.
The Premier League organizers have received a request to hold a vote in June on eliminating VAR in the 2024/25 season.
“VAR has caused many unforeseen consequences, damaging the relationship between fans and football, eroding the brand value of the Premier League,” Wolves said.
According to the Molineux home team, VAR had a negative impact on goal celebrations, causing confusion and frustration in the stadium due to the lengthy VAR checking process, and creating hostility from fans.
In addition, Wolves also directly said that VAR did not complete its task, which was to correct the referee’s mistakes: “Now, referees abuse VAR, affecting the smoothness of the match. The appearance of VAR also reduces the referee’s power, disrupts the tournament’s inherently fast pace of play and creates unusually long overtime periods.
At the end of the application, Wolves were not satisfied with the fact that VAR often made unconvincing decisions: “VAR tarnishes the reputation of the Premier League and promotes corruption.”
Immediately, the Premier League also responded to Wolves’ request: “We are completely open to creating a discussion about VAR with member clubs during the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders on June 6, 2019. 6. Teams have the right to make suggestions and we will note concerns about the use of VAR.”
According to regulations, in order to abolish or change something in the Premier League, the proposal must receive approval from 14 out of 20 participating teams.
This season, VAR is leaving many professional questions, as referees make too many mistakes. Even in the match between Tottenham and Man City on May 15, the referee team ignored the offside situation when Kevin De Bruyne assisted Erling Haaland to open the score.
