Coming to the NBA in less than a year, rookie Victor Wembanyama has conquered a series of records and desirable achievements. Most recently, the tall French striker received the Rookie of The Year award (best rookie) and was honored in the NBA All-Rookie First Team, the most outstanding rookie squad of the 2023-24 season.
Today, the young talent of the San Antonio Spurs achieved another new achievement, making him the first player in NBA history to do so. According to the NBA’s announcement of the two typical All-Defense teams, Victor Wembanyama has appeared in the first team (1st Team).
This helped Wemby become the first rookie player in league history to appear in the NBA All-Defensive 1st Team. The number of votes for Wembanyama was 98 out of 99 voters, second only to the absolute number of votes of Defensive Player of The Year – Rudy Gobert.
The three remaining names in the NBA’s most typical defensive lineup for the 2023-24 season are bigman Bam Adebayo of the Miami Heat, striker Herb Jones of the New Orleans Pelicans and finally bigman Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers. All 5 players named are strikers or midfielders.
This is the 7th time Rudy Gobert has been named to the All-Defensive team, all of them on the 1st Team. Additionally, this is the 5th time for both Anthony Davis and Bam Adebayo. Herb Jones, for the first time, appeared in the tournament’s typical defensive lineup.
In parallel with the 1st Team, the NBA announced the second typical defensive squad (All-Defensive 2nd Team). Interestingly, this group consists entirely of defenders and the players are somewhat small compared to the 1st Team.
The five honored players include Chicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso, Orlando Magic guard Jalen Suggs, Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels along with the Boston Celtics defender duo – Derrick White and Jrue Holiday.
With this achievement, Victor Wembanyama became the 6th rookie in history to appear on the All-Defensive team, alongside legends such as Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Manute Bol, Hakeem Olajuwon and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
However, the special thing is that Wembanyama was named in the 1st Team to set an NBA record, while the 5 legends mentioned above only appeared in the 2nd Team.
