Maverick Carter, a businessman and longtime friend of LeBron James, admitted to federal investigators that he bet on NBA games through an illegal gambling ring. The information was published in The Washington Post on Thursday (local time).
The report comes after a series of investigations into former baseball player Wayne Nix were revealed. Nix was convicted of operating illegal gambling operations abroad.
Maverick Carter was one of Nix’s business partners. In 2021, Carter himself was also investigated for Nix’s wrongdoing, but at that time no conclusions were drawn.

During the 2021 investigation, Maverick Carter admitted to betting on NBA games through an illegal gambling platform.
According to The Washington Post, Carter ordered 20 different basketball and football games over an unknown period of time. However, the businessman denied participating in betting on matches featuring LeBron James. The amount of money Carter bet on NBA matches was up to $25,000.
According to the NBA’s gambling management policy, players, coaches, members of team management and senior team staff are not permitted to bet on NBA games. However, those in the category of business management outside of sports activities are not restricted by any regulations.

Carter has been a business partner of LeBron James since 2006. He co-founded the marketing agency “LRMR” with the Los Angeles Lakers superstar, as well as other celebrities such as Rich Paul (CEO of Klutch Sports ) or Randy Mims (business manager on LeBron James’ team).
