Researchers have found an ancient tomb containing pure gold treasure belonging to a tribal leader at an archaeological park in Panama, according to CBS News on March 4.
Panama’s Ministry of Culture said the tomb was estimated to be about 1,200 years old , belonged to a tribal leader and was interred by dozens of victims. The tomb is located on the grounds of El Caño Archaeological Park .

Inside the tomb, the archaeological team found many gold treasures, including bracelets, 2 belts made from gold beads, crocodile-shaped earrings, and earrings covered with gold sperm whale teeth. and many round discs.
Experts also found earrings in the shapes of men and women, two bells, a dress made of dog teeth and a set of flutes made of bone.
The El Caño organization said the ancient Panama tomb most likely belonged to a high-ranking leader in his 30s.
Dr. Julia Mayo, Director of the El Caño Foundation and leader of the archaeological project, said that besides the leader’s body, the tomb may also contain up to 31 other people who were sacrificed.
Ms. Mayo added that excavation work on the tomb had not yet been completed at the time of publication, so they did not know exactly how many people were inside the tomb.
The leader was buried face down on the ground and lying on top of a woman’s body.
Ms. Linette Montenegro, National Director of Heritage at the Panamanian Ministry of Culture, said the project will launch in 2022.
El Caño Archaeological Park is a cemetery built around 700 and abandoned since 1000. This place is in Coclé province, about 160km southwest of Panama City.
