Nótt is a figure from Norse mythology who personifies the night and is associated with darkness and the passage of time. She is the daughter of a jötunn, or giant, named Nörvi, also known as Narfi. Nótt is often linked with the horse Hrímfaxi. She has been married three times. Her first husband was Naglfari, and they had a son named Auðr. Her second husband was Annar, and their daughter was Jörð, who personifies the earth. Nótt’s third husband was the god Dellingr, and their son was Dagr, who personifies the day. In the Poetic Edda, a poem called “Alvissmál” provides various names for night, each reflecting the perspective of different beings in the Norse cosmos. Among men, she is called “Night”, among the gods, she is known as “Mist-Time”, the Holy Powers refer to her as “Hooded Hour”, the giants call her “Sorrowless”, the elves know her as “Sleep-joy”, and the dwarves call her “Dream-Weaver”. #archaeohistories
