The US women’s soccer team will face Australia, Germany and Morocco or Zambia in Group B at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This will be the first major tournament of new coach Emma Hayes. In November 2023, it was announced that the former Chelsea coach would lead the US team. The team that won the gold medal four times will be determined to win the championship to regain their spirit after going through the worst WC period in history, when they were eliminated by Sweden in the round of 16.
Defending World Cup champion Spain is in Group C with Japan, Brazil, Nigeria or South Africa. The rematch between Spain and Japan is the most worth-watching match in this group. Japan crushed Spain with four unanswered goals in the 2023 World Cup group stage. Spain continued to play sublimely after World Cup when winning the UEFA Nations League championship.
The remaining group includes New Zealand, Colombia, defending champion Canada and host team France.
In the men’s tournament, the US Olympic team will be in Group A along with hosts France, New Zealand and the winner of the play-off between teams from the Asian and African confederations. The US Olympic team returned to the tournament after being absent from the previous 3 editions.
The Argentine Olympic team was placed in Group B with Morocco, Ukraine and the 3rd division team at the U23 Asian Finals. Olympic Spain, runner-up at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is in Group C with Egypt, the Dominican Republic and the runner-up team of the U23 Asian Finals. Group D includes Paraguay, Mali, Israel and the U23 Asian champions.
Olympic men’s soccer is a competition between U23 national teams with three spots reserved for players over the age limit.
The tournament will begin two days before the opening ceremony of the Olympics on July 24. The men’s soccer final took place on August 9 and the women’s final took place the next day. Soccer at the 2024 Paris Olympics will be held at several locations in France including Paris, Nantes, Bordeaux, Marseille, Nice, Saint-Etienne and Lyon.
